Welcome to Cold War Gamer, a blog I am using to record my Cold War wargaming projects. These range from fictitious Cold War hot projects to historical conflicts that took place around the globe throughout the Cold War era, all modelled and gamed in 20mm. The blog includes links to various resources useful to the Cold War Gamer.

My current projects include: Central Front; British & Soviet. South African Border War; Angolans and South Africans. Soviet Afghan War; Soviets and Afghans

ORBAT

These pages provide an overview of and a set of links to the principal resources of the blog.  These resources can also be accessed from the tag menu but that will provide a less structured view of the available information on the blog.  Where there is no link to the item it is still a work in progress and will be posted at some time in the future.

Overview of Blog ORBAT resources

The ORBAT or TO&E posts cover the basic organisation and equipment structures of the force being described, they consider:
  • how these varied over time with organisational and equipment change
  • how and why force structures were tailored for specific missions, task organisation
  • how these varied depending on geographical deployment
  • how I have chosen to represent the units

The Soviet Armed Forces

The Canadian Army in Europe

Work in progress includes Aviation and Air Support, Light Battle Groups, Mechanised Battle Groups and Airmobile Battle Groups.

ORBAT Research Resources

There are a number of excellent web and book resources that I have used in compiling my views of these Cold War ORBATS where I have reviewed these as blog posts they are listed below:

Web Resources

I have already reviewed a number of useful web sites, the descriptions of what is contained can be found on the review pages together with links to the resources.

In addition to the reviewed books, there is a book list on the right hand side below the S&S Advert, this lists every book I own on the cold war. If they are available from amazon you will find a link to them in the cold war book store where you can access any reviews on Amazon.  The most useful of those with regard to ORBAT that I have not already reviewed are:

Inside the Soviet Army Today,  both the Osprey title and the Suverov book, Rats Tails (Gulf War, useful task org examples), The British Army Ospreys and The Modern British Airforce.

The Cold War Bookstore contains links to over 60 Titles on the Cold War covered in my book list
